For the 2009 season, the regular price of the Direct TV NFL Sunday ticket package is going to be around $300. With a slumbering economy affecting consumer spending, you might be wondering if the Sunday Ticket is a ripoff, or if it is still a worthwhile value for football fans.
The first thing you should probably do is evaluate how much of an NFL fan you are. Hardcore fans, fantasy football players, and those who bet the line are probably the prime target for Direct TV and the NFL. Another huge market is the fan who lives outside of the area where his favorite team plays. If you fall into one of these categories, then the NFL package might be right for you.
If we stop and evaluate the cost of the Sunday Ticket package, it doesn’t look so bad. Since the NFL season runs 17 weeks, you are looking at a price tag of $17.65 each week for the package. If you add on the Superfan package for another $100, the weekly cost rises to $23.53 for every NFL Sunday.
Consider the cost of attending an NFL game. If you are taking a family of four, you will easily spend $300 on tickets, and probably another $75 to $100 on parking, food and beer. Add to that any NFL merchandise for yourself or the kids, and you could easily drop $500 on one Sunday NFL game.
Alternatively, you could go out to your favorite restaurant or bar to watch your team play every Sunday. In that case, you could easily run up a tab of $50 or more enjoying the game.
When you look at the alternatives, the NFL Sunday Ticket package may not be as expensive as you think. Of course you have to be a Direct TV customer before you can even order the package, so that may be your first order of business before the season starts.
